2010 may very well go down as the year that internet-connected TV became widely popular. In the second part of this year alone, we will have witnessed the introduction of the new Apple TV, dirt-cheap Roku boxes, Google TV, and the long-awaited Boxee box. There isn’t a very well-defined term for these devices, so I’m just going to call them by their generic term, set-top boxes (STB). But to be clear, I am not referring to the type of box that is provided to you by your cable or satellite operator; we're talking about independent devices that stream their content over traditional internet.

I didn’t grow up with a TV, so I wasn’t trained from an early age to sit through ads. Now, when I watch the tube (and I’ve been doing a lot of that these days), I have an almost allergic reaction to ads. I once cornered an ABC executive at a wedding and chastised him for how they rolled out advertising on their online player. Why would you interrupt Ugly Betty three or four times per episode with the same Nasonex commercial? Why would you let an advertiser do this? It’s terrible for everyone. He responded with a shrug, and mumbled something about “working out the kinks.” I never watched online again.

The lack of cues on the screen may be a problem for new users, but users are encouraged to keep their eyes on the television, where they should be focused.

This post is a response to Hulu’s request that Boxee discontinue offering Hulu TV through it’s application while Hulu sorts out its relationship with its content providers.

You know I’m a Hulu fan and a Boxee fan. I’ve blogged and...

How many remotes are sitting on your coffee table? According to the Consumer Electronics Association, an average American home has 4 remotes, and there could be up to 5 or 6 remotes for running a home theater. Another study by research firm Gfk shows 49% of European households having 5 or more remote controls and 87% having 3 or more. This research claims that, in a quarter of European homes, there is only one person who knows how to operate all the technology. This is exactly what happened in our house. With many look-ali...
