At Punchcut, we look past old television paradigms to create user interfaces that align with a more connected, dynamic digital world. Our UIs strive to bring clarity to television's growing complexity and reduce the barriers of adoption.
Challenge
A gesturally controlled TV interface can add layers of easy interaction
that don't detract from the viewing experience at hand.
This EPG design demonstrated that the guide need not be obtrusive
but can add meaning to help viewers discover content.
In an evolving digital world, traditional television UI models are no longer relevant. Content options are expanding. Broadcast, on-demand, and internet TV are fusing into one television experience. This added complexity means frustration for viewers and users and companies can no longer design linear, one-dimensional, single-user experiences.
Solution
We partner with companies interested in reconsidering how TV content, and non-traditional content via TV apps, plug in to a mobile, social, and multi-device world. We help our clients capitalize on disparate content channels and re-envision the TV as one device in an inclusive digital ecosystem. As companies further distribute experiences across devices, the television will be a critical touchpoint. Our research on convergence is reflected in our design solutions that focus on bringing unity and simplicity to television's vast potential for connecting people and devices around a common consumption experience.
Over the course of our work with the changing TV landscape, we’ve distilled key insights for creating interfaces that re-envision and demystify televsion experiences. Here are a few excerpted from our article The Future of Television Is Not Television:
_ Respond to changing human "channels": User aren’t just flipping channels – they’re changing devices, locations and tasks constantly. Build interfaces that support a user’s needs independent of place and device.
_ Build a hub for digital life: Televisions are the central convergence point of media. Capitalize on its place in the home to engage users in new interactive, social and mobile contexts.
_ Design for shared experiences: More than most other devices, television belong to the home. Engage audiences with community-aware interfaces that support the group and its individual parts.
